What is GST?

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is India’s unified indirect tax on the supply of goods and services. It replaced many earlier central and state taxes (VAT, service tax, etc.) with a single regime. Different rates apply to different items: common rates are 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%, with some items at 0% or special rates. Businesses collect GST from customers and pay it to the government after claiming input tax credit. This calculator helps you quickly find the GST amount and total (or base) for any rate, whether the amount is before GST (exclusive) or already includes GST (inclusive).

For consumers, the price you see may be inclusive of GST; for invoicing and compliance, you often need to show the base amount and GST separately. Use this tool for quick checks when pricing goods and services or when reverse-calculating from an inclusive amount. For official GST filing and matters, refer to the GST portal and a tax advisor.

Exclusive vs inclusive

Exclusive: The amount is before GST. You add GST on top: GST = amount × (rate/100); total = amount + GST. Use this when you have a base price and need to add tax. Inclusive: The amount already includes GST. You split it: base = amount ÷ (1 + rate/100); GST = amount − base. Use this when you have a final price (e.g. from a bill) and need to find how much was tax. The calculator supports both modes so you can work either way.

Example: ₹10,000 + 18% GST

If the amount is exclusive (₹10,000 before GST): GST at 18% = ₹1,800, so total = ₹11,800. If the amount is inclusive (₹11,800 is the price including GST): base = 11,800 ÷ 1.18 = ₹10,000, and GST = ₹1,800. So whether you start from the base or the total, the split is the same. Use the calculator above with your amount and rate (5%, 12%, 18%, 28%, or custom) to get exact figures for invoicing or checks.

Benefits of Using This Calculator

A GST calculator quickly gives you the GST amount and total (or base) for any rate, so you can price goods and services correctly or reverse-calculate from an inclusive amount. It supports both exclusive and inclusive modes, so you can add GST to a base price or split a final price into base and tax.

Use it for quick checks when preparing quotes, invoices, or when verifying bills. It helps with compliance by ensuring you apply the correct rate and show the breakdown clearly. For official GST filing and input credit, always refer to the GST portal and a tax advisor.

How to Use This Calculator

Choose exclusive (amount before GST—you want to add tax) or inclusive (amount already includes GST—you want to split it). Enter the amount in rupees and select or enter the GST rate (e.g. 5%, 12%, 18%, 28%). The calculator shows the GST amount and either the total (in exclusive mode) or the base (in inclusive mode).
