PPF Calculator
Calculate Public Provident Fund maturity and interest. 15-year tenure, tax-free returns. Max ₹1.5 lakh per year.
PPF has a max deposit of ₹1.5 lakh per year. Rate is set by government.
What is PPF?
The Public Provident Fund (PPF) is a government-backed savings scheme in India with a 15-year tenure. You can open a PPF account at a bank or post office and deposit up to ₹1.5 lakh per financial year. The interest rate is set by the government (e.g. 7.1% p.a. for recent quarters) and is compounded annually. PPF is tax-free (EEE): contributions qualify for 80C deduction, interest is not taxed, and maturity is tax-free. There is no TDS. PPF is one of the most popular long-term, low-risk savings products in India, especially for retirement and child education. You can extend the account in blocks of 5 years after 15 years. This calculator helps you see the maturity value and interest for your chosen annual deposit, rate, and tenure.
Deposits can be made in lump sum or in installments during the year; the calculator assumes one annual deposit per year for simplicity. The government notifies the rate each quarter; use the current rate or your assumption for planning. Use the calculator to compare PPF with FD or other products and to plan how much to invest each year to reach a target.
Formula
PPF interest is compounded annually. The maturity value is the future value of an annuity due (deposit at the start of each year): FV = P × [((1+r)^n − 1) / r] × (1+r), where P = annual deposit, r = annual rate (decimal), n = years. So each year's deposit grows for the full period. The calculator uses this formula. Total invested = P × n; interest earned = FV − total invested. The government may change the rate; we use the rate you enter (e.g. 7.1%).
Example calculation
You deposit ₹1,50,000 per year (maximum) in PPF at 7.1% p.a. for 15 years. Total invested = ₹22.5 lakh. The maturity value works out to approximately ₹40.7 lakh, so interest earned is about ₹18.2 lakh—all tax-free. If you deposit ₹1 lakh per year for 15 years at 7.1%, maturity is about ₹27.1 lakh. Use the calculator above with your annual deposit (max ₹1.5 lakh), the current or assumed rate, and tenure to get exact figures. PPF is ideal for long-term, risk-free, tax-free wealth building.
Benefits of Using This Calculator
A PPF calculator helps you see the maturity value and interest for your chosen annual deposit and tenure, so you can plan how much to invest each year and what you will get at maturity. It shows total invested vs maturity, so you know the tax-free gain. Use it to compare with FD (taxable) or other products and to decide whether to max out at ₹1.5 lakh or invest a lower amount. The calculator is free and requires no sign-up.
You can try different tenures (e.g. 15 vs 20 years with extension) if your bank allows extension. Remember that the rate is set by the government and can change each quarter; use the current rate for best estimate.
How to Use This Calculator
Enter your annual deposit in rupees (max ₹1.5 lakh per year for PPF), the interest rate (e.g. 7.1% as notified by the government), and the tenure in years (typically 15). The calculator shows maturity value, total invested, and interest earned. Change the inputs to see how maxing out at ₹1.5 lakh vs a lower deposit affects maturity. Use it to plan annual savings and to set expectations for tax-free returns.
For the latest PPF rate, check the government notification or your bank. This calculator is for illustration; actual maturity depends on the rate applicable each year and on deposit timing (earlier in the year earns more interest for that year).
